AM

Work began with a pick pass of the entire trench, starting in the north and working south.  Soil is brown, claylike, and mottled, containing inclusions of terracotta and carbon.  Soil was sorted directly into buckets, while in the trench.  During this pick pass, two pieces of pan tile with linear incisions (Find #1) and an impressed pan tile with a possible letter (Find #2) were recovered.

Soil remains mottled and claylike and so it was decided to pick again, with soil being sorted directly into buckets.  During this pick pass, a piece of butchered bone (Find #3) was found, as well as a sherd of incised pottery (Find #4) and a slipped, ridged, grayware rim sherd (Find #5).

After this pick pass, since the soil remained brown, claylike, and mottled, a third pick pass was begun, starting in the NE quarter of the trench.  Soil continued to be sorted directly into buckets.

Baulk walls were trimmed for the remainder of the morning.

PM

Work continued with a pick pass of the trench, continuing the pick pass begun in the morning.  Soil remains brown, claylike, and mottled and is still sorted directly into buckets.  During this pick pass, a sherd of painted pottery with two parallel red lines (Find #6) was recovered.  When the pick pass was continued in the southern half of the trench, a raking sima fragment was found (Find #7).  However, this sima fragment appears to have bee recovered from a small amount of backfill remaining from T-23, for the soil is much looser in the area in which the sima was found; it was found within some soil bordering the original T-48 trench and T-23.

Another half pick pass was done in the northern half of the trench.  Soil continued to be brown, claylike, and mottled and soil was sorted directly into buckets.
