Description Locus 8 consisted of a hard, brown, claylike, slightly mottled soil that contained inclusions of terracotta and carbon. When Locus 8 was first opened, it extended throughout the entire trench, including the eastern extension. As the floor of the trench was lowered and broght down to the same elevation as a lower, unexcavated portion of T-23, the eastern extension was extended 90cm to the south and Locus 8 encompased this area as well, so that the new SE corner of the trench was located at 54.90S/198E. Locus 8 was a fairly deep locus, averaging approximately 35cm in depth. Locus 8 also yielded high quantities of material, including 17.5 bowls of tile and plaster, 517 sherds of pottery, and 269 pieces of bone. Additionally, some identifiable archaic-period architectural terracottas, such as a fragment of gorgon hair, a raking sima fragment, and a rosette applique were recovered from this locus, indicating that Locus 8 dates to the archaic period; it may be that Locus 8 should be identified as an archaic destruction or habitation stratum. Stratigraphically, this is interesting, for Locus 8, which contains identifiably archaic materials, was at a lower elevation than the series of column pads uncovered in the T-30 area, which were found in a securely dated orientalizing context.
