West Extension: Areas of Stone Concentration.  ( .)

June 29, 1993

A.M.

Continued troweling in H-I/47-48, leveling floor to approx. 95-100 cm, defining around stones and moving westward. Only a few pieces of tile, 2 small flakes of bronze, and about 10 sherds were found in these meters. Soil was slightly yellowish and sandy. Also continued troweling in H-I/45-44, moving west and encountering more stones in the possible formation. Soil was medium brown with a few flakes of bronze and about 12 pieces of pottery and bone. Average depth was 90 cm.

Picked and troweled in meters H-I/42 to bring floor to level of 90 cm. Soil was reddish with plaster and lots of large carbon inclusions. Discovered the end of a rocchetto (find #1) in H/42 and found 2 bronze tacks and a section of bronze tube in I/42 (finds #2, 5, 4, respectively). A large piece of slag (find #3) was found in the barrow from meters H-I/42. Recovered 1/8 cassetta of tile and about 15 pieces of pottery and bone (including a large pithos handle) as well as several small flakes of bronze.

Photographs taken.

This afternoon work continued in meters H-I/48-47 moving to the west. The stones appeared to thin out toward the west of this cut. Very little pottery or tile was removed, although one piece of bronze (find #12) was discovered. The soil in this area is yellowish. The depth of this area is 95-100 cm.

In meters H-I/45-44 work continued defining the extent of the stone concentration. This area was leveled to approximately 90 cm and the soil is brown with a yellow tint. Pottery and tile were infrequent throughout this area. In I/45-44 the remainder of the tile layer, at 70-85 cm, was removed producing about 1/5 a cassetta of tile. Two fragments of gorgon hair (finds # 13 & 15) and another piece of ridge terracotta (find #14). The soil among these tiles was medium brown.

Meters H-I/43 were taken down to a level of about 90 cm, moving east. The soil in this area continues to be reddish brown with many inclusions of carbon and plaster. 1/8 cassette of tile and \xbc latte of pottery and bone, and numerous flakes of bronze were removed. Finds from this area included a bucchero tondo fragment (find #7), and several pieces of worked bone, including one

bone petal (finds #8, 9, 10, 11, &16). An unusual piece of bronze was also removed from this area (find #6)
