Stratigraphy Summary
By the end of the season the trench was completed in J-K/80-85 and L-M/82-85. many changes in the stratigraphy occur over these meters. As mentioned on p. 183 , top soil had been removed previously from parts of this area, which made depth measurements difficult. How much top soil existed on these meters we can only guess.
The most striking stratigraphical feature of the trench was the great difference in the soil in the eastern and western parts of the cut. In meters J-K/80-81 (part of 82) below top soil a sterile yellow-brown soil was encountred w/ large stones in J/80-81. Very little was found in this soil which lasted until roughly 60 cm below surface. In contrast to this, in the eastern meters J-M/82-85 below a brown layer (which may be the remainer of the top soil) an orange-brown layer full of pottery, plaster and tile was found. No yellow-brown layer was encountered. And, back in the western part of the cut, below the yellow-brown, the same orange-brown soil shows up. Pottery, tile, and plaster then begin to turn up, as well. A burn layer present below the orange-brown soil in the eastern part of the cut disappears (or sinks) in the western part.
Right above the burn layer in the L-M/82-85 a tile fall was encountred and lifted. Above this fall (in the orange-brown soil), directly on top of it, was a great pack of plaster, which had to be completely removed in order to expose the tiles. Above the plaster, a layer of small bits of tile existed, which I did not associate w/ the actual fall. A dip in the ground level became apparent in the tile fall layer ,whic ran parallel to the building. After the tiles had been measured, a packing of small stones seem to have been found, perhaps lining the ditch for water removed.
