General remarks | This is new locus number opened when the L.5206 is closed. Even though the soil texture and color was very similar to L.5206, a new locus was necessary because plaster surface L. 5216 was discovered in the E of L.5206. In addition, the tumbled down ground stone found near the plaster surface indicates that we may be getting into a new deposit. If there will be no significant change in the soil character, then it might be concluded in the end that this locus and L. 5206 are the same. |

Has note | Contexts excavated in trenches were recorded using the "locus system." A locus is any discrete three-dimensional entity excavated in a trench. The key to the locus system is the recognition that a locus is any one thing. Differences in soil composition or texture are therefore as important as, for example, the difference between a pit and a wall. If two entities were distinct, they were considered separate loci and were therefore assigned separate locus numbers. It should also be noted that every context excavated in a trench was given a locus number and thus the trench itself is made up completely of excavated loci. |
