Description Locus 1 is a dark brown humus layer with organic material including leaves, grass, and roots. A few rocks ten to forty centimeters in length included in the soil matrix. Five large stumps twenty to seventy centimeters in diameter and four living trees which require a thirty centimeter soil buffer appear across the trench. Fragments of slag, pottery, terra cotta, and bone recovered at this level in small concentrations. Seven fragments of Medieval pottery found (later consolidated at the magazzino). What artifacts were found were worn. The soil pack was loose and the locus was relatively shallow--between eleven and twenty-one centimeters deep.
