Pick pass done in the easternmost meter by three meters. Soil consistent with Locus 1 , organic rich humus layer with many roots, root fungus, and small rocks (3-15cm). Soil sorted and cleaned from the trench. Terra cotta and pottery found while cleaning. A second pick pass done in the same section, leveling down hills left during the previous pick pass. Soil sorted and cleaned from the trench, rocks (3-15cm) to rock pile. There are fewer rocks in this section that in the western meter by three meters. Terra cotta found during cleaning. A third pick pass done over the eastern meter with the goal of revealing the next locus. Some medium brown-yellowish soil being revealed in the northern area. Fewer rocks being encountered during this pick pass. Soil consistent with Locus 1 , sorted and cleaned from the trench. Terra cotta and pottery found during cleaning. Fourth
pick pass done in the eastern meter. Soil sorted and cleaned, consistent with Locus 1 . Patches of medium brown-yellowish soil especially near the northern baulk wall. In cleaning recovered terra cotta and pottery, as well as one fragment of slag.

Locus 1
Pick pass done in the eastern most meter by three meters. Yellowish-medium brown soil now revealed over the entire meter. Locus 1 cleaned from the trench. During sorting many fragments of terra cotta and pottery found, somewhat better preserved than the fragments found. First bone fragments found, as well as several fragments of slag. Small fragments of slag (1-5cm) will be collected in bulk, while larger fragments (5cm+) or those with significant shapes will be collected as special finds. Also found an impasto double handle fragment.

Locus 1
Hand axes utilized to clear the 2x3m area between the new medium brown-yellowish soil revealed in westernmost and easternmost meters. Soil is being sorted and cleaned as is it loosened. Terra cotta, pottery, and bone are all present.
In the western portion there are many rocks (5-30cm) within the matrix of Locus 1 , as well as many large roots from the tree and stumps there. Very few rocks encountered in the eastern section, and much smaller (1-5cm). Terra cotta being found in both areas, fairly worn, pitted, and encrusted. A 30cm soil buffer is being left around the tree along the southern baulk wall.
PM
In the afternoon we continued to pick the middle two by three section of CA 72. Using handpicks, two teams began breaking apart soil from the eastern and western baulk wall, respectively. The goal was to uncover Locus 2 across the trench. In the two by three meter section, the soil remained much the same as it did in the rest of the trench: a dark brown with root rot and rocks (3-15cm) included, though both remain more common in the western half of the trench and particularly so in the northern section. Small pieces of terra cotta and pottery were found in both the eastern and western part of the trench. As both teams proceeded toward the center of the trench, roots both large and small were
removed. In the eastern section of the trench, a piece of medieval pottery was uncovered.

Locus 1
Work continued in the middle meter by three meter section of the trench. Rocks continued to be removed, although they were much smaller (3-5cm on average) than they have been previously. The only exceptions were two or three large rocks (up to 36cm long) in the center of the section. Roots were cleared as well and stumps were cleaned and defined. Terra cotta and pottery continued to be found throughout the trench. In the second meter by three meter section from the eastern baulk, two associated pieces of Medieval pottery were found.

The final portion of the day was spent clearing out the middle of CA 72, removing dirt and roots and defining rocks and roots when necessary. Stumps were also defined, although we left a thirty centimeter circumference around the trees along the northern and southern baulk walls. All of this work was done using hands, hand picks, and trowels. Terra cotta and pottery continued to be found, although in smaller amounts than in the sections along the eastern and western baulk wall.
