Munsell Color 10YR 4/3 brown
Description Locus 1 was topsoil that extended across the entire trench. It was dark brown in color and was relatively loose. It was especially loose in the northern half of the trench, where there were five stumps and extensive root networks. Throughout the entire trench, the soil contained small rocks, with maximum dimensions of 10-15cm, that did not form any feature. Relatively large amounts of tile were initially found in the northern part of the locus, where a tile dump from 2014 was located, but once these tiles were removed, very few roofing tiles or ceramics were found. No bone was recovered from this locus. The materials contained within Locus 1 included a mixture of ancient and medieval artifacts, including three sherds of medieval pottery, indicating that this locus was not contextually secure.
