General remarks | Round pit in NW corner of trench that cuts the wall L11 in the SE corner of trench F20. From west baulk (see photos) it clearly was cut from a much higher level, cutting cobblestone layer L2. The top elevation of the pit reflects the highest EXCAVATED elevation of the pit, not it"s true top as seen in the baulk. The pit was not seen until later in the season beause the bulk of it remained in a minibaulk left between the NW corner of F22 and the SE corner of F20. After we found the edge of L18 we cut down the mini baulk and found the full outline of the pit. We did NOT completely excavate the pit this season. |

Has note | Contexts excavated in trenches were recorded using the "locus system." A locus is any discrete three-dimensional entity excavated in a trench. The key to the locus system is the recognition that a locus is any one thing. Differences in soil composition or texture are therefore as important as, for example, the difference between a pit and a wall. If two entities were distinct, they were considered separate loci and were therefore assigned separate locus numbers. It should also be noted that every context excavated in a trench was given a locus number and thus the trench itself is made up completely of excavated loci. |
