Trench 22

Wednesday June 22 2005
Today we finished tracing surface L19 to its abutment with wall L17. We also decided to name two new loci, L21 and L22, two walls or construction elements that we now believe are best viewed as separate entities from L17. Finally, we further articulated pit L18 and it’s shape and path are now clear. We took overhead photos of this trench as well as adjacent trenches F19 and F20. The trench is now closed and we will not conduct further work this season.
L19:
At the end of the day yesterday, we cut a few courses of brick at the northwestern baulk, a piece of what is now wall L21. This cut confirmed the line of the north face of wall L17 and today we followed the plaster floor L19 up to L21, L17, and new L22, which is the bricked in space between L17 and L21. The plaster was variably preserved but we did catch it wrapping up and bonding to the north face of both walls L17 and L22 in different places. This work confirmed extent of surface L19.
L18:
We traced surface L19 up to the edge of this pit and in the process better defined its shape. It is very round, about 1.06m in diameter. It was cut from above the first layer of cobblestones found in these trenches, just a meter below the ground surface, all the way down to and through L19. It also cut a wall L11 in trench F20. At least half of the pit is still in the NW baulk of trench F22. See today’s photographs for a clear view of how this pit cuts everything.
L21 and L22:
Now that we finished tracing L19 it seems clear that the western end of wall L17 ends at the same place as wall L11. Between the west end of wall L11 and the beginning of wall L16 there is a space, for now kept with L12. At the west end of L17 a new locus, L22, fills the gap between L17 and another wall, L21, which parallels wall L16. It seems then that there are two roughly 1m wide walls, L11 and L17, that abut and come to a gap which may have initially served as an entrance or perhaps was blocked from the first use of the structure. Stub wall L22 then serves as the opposite side of the doorway formed with the southern end of wall L11 in trench F20. Finally, walls L16 and L21 continue to the west as abutting, 1m wide walls on the same orientation as walls L11 and L17.
Summary:
We finished work in the trench today, having reached a good stopping point. We finished exposing floor L19, tracing it to its abutment with walls L17 and new walls L21 and L22. We confirmed that pit L18 continues deeper but we did not finish excavating it. We clarified the relationship between all the walls and surfaces in the trench. We decided not to remove surface L19. We also left pit L18 unfinished because digging it may expose earlier materials that we are not prepared to deal with properly this season.

Has note | The purpose of the daily journal was to record the activities taking place in a trench each day. This included which loci were excavated, how and why loci were excavated and the ongoing impressions of the relationships among loci. It should be noted that journals record the actions, impressions and ideas of trench supervisors during the excavations. They are not, therefore, the final interpretations or syntheses of the emerging data. |
