General remarks This is the large black ashy layer which ended up encompassing almost the entire trench. It was first found underneath the locus L1034, and it was seen in section that it appeared to continue underneath. The black ashy layer may come from its proximity to the oven L1045, which was unfortunately only partially complete it appears. Another possibility is that this ashy layer is a destruction layer of a fire or some other occurrence. Although it is difficult to interpret this black layer, the presence of a pot smash directly on top of it leads us to call it a surface, as it appears to have been used as a surface for at least some period of time.

Has note Contexts excavated in trenches were recorded using the "locus system." A locus is any discrete three-dimensional entity excavated in a trench. The key to the locus system is the recognition that a locus is any one thing. Differences in soil composition or texture are therefore as important as, for example, the difference between a pit and a wall. If two entities were distinct, they were considered separate loci and were therefore assigned separate locus numbers. It should also be noted that every context excavated in a trench was given a locus number and thus the trench itself is made up completely of excavated loci.
