Descriptive Attribute Value(s)
Location East boundary, east extension, central sondage between Loci 3 and 6.
Preserved Height ca. 1.00 m.
Stage Description Blockage of the vaults.
Phase V
Description The west row of the blockage inserted between the north and south walls of the east vault (Tr. 97, 2004, Locus 12) in the East Boundary/East Stylobate Wall (Tr. 97, 2004, Locus 28). A top course consisting of two dressed ashlars were previously uncovered and removed during the excavation of the vault (Tr. 97, 2004, Locus 16). The entire blockage, described as a “constructed insertion”, was defined as Tr. 97, 2004, Locus 29. The current locus defines the west face of this blockage exposed in the current sounding to an additional depth of 1.00 m; the entirety of this construction was not visible in antiquity, being below the level of the W CP East floor. As with the course previously removed, the upper two courses were laid in wet-mortar to abut the side walls of the vault. The top course consists of two fine ashlars with Nabataean dressing marks, with the remaining space at the north edge being filled with snecking stones, which include a large ashlar fragment that also has dressing marks. The second course contains one ashlar with Nabataean dressing marks and one hewn ashlar, with the remaining space at the south edge filled with snecking stones. All of the Nabataean dressing marks are worked with short strokes; the three ashlars are laid with these marks aligned at the same angle, while the smaller fragment was laid with the marks angled in the opposite direction. The lowest course exposed consisted of rubble and snecking stones, along with one rough hewn ashlar, laid in a compacted soil fill. Further excavation was halted in order to leave the fill in front of the blockage both as a step to aid excavation in the central sondage, as well as to have a balk to map the stratigraphy. The blockage represents a secondary construction effort and is therefore staged to this modification event.
