Condition | Bronze cotter pin preserved in five, non-joining fragments. All pieces are heavily oxidized and corroded. One of the small, flat, prong pieces and the two coil fragments are broken at both ends, the other prong fragment may preserve one finished end. The codder pin fragment is also broken at its two ends and has been bent out of shape. The coil and the two prong fragments were attached to the pin when found but have since broken off (see trench book drawing). |
Description | Five non-joining fragments of a cotter pin. The mostly preserved codder pin consists of a thin flat sheet which is bent in half. The bent end is a rounded loop which tapers inward and extends in two -now curving- parallel prongs which do not preserve finished ends. Two non-joining prong fragments are preserved separately. Roughly half way along the shaft, on the same side of both prongs, there are two lateral projections where the coil was once attached. The coil is preserved in two circular fragments. |
