Description | Locus 2 spanned the entire trench, consisting of the original topsoil and humus layer predating the soil that was redeposited from previous excavations. The soil is a light medium brown in color and is filled with many small rocks. As locus 2 was excavated, medium to large sized rocks were revealed that were similar in orientation to the rocks uncovered in T 77. Among the material recovered, locus 2 yielded fairly large amounts of worn pieces of tile fragments and pottery sherds, as well as a moderate amount of bone, two of which were definitively diagnostic. Two additional fragments of bone were burnt. Among the metal finds in locus 2, several fragments of bronze flakes were present throughout the locus, along with one piece of iron and one piece of slag. Within this locus, the concentration of medium to large sized rocks was declared a linear rock feature and the two hard-packed clay-like soil areas were declared two distinct floor surfaces, both approximately 30 cm in diameter and identifiable by the slightly lighter brown color of the soil. North of and beneath the linear rock feature, bedrock was uncovered as well. Each floor surface contained some visible pottery sherds, and some tile, all of which rested horizontally on top. All materials recovered appear ancient in date, indicating that locus 2 is a contextualized, stratified deposit. Special finds included one fragment of cut bone and two fragments of burnt bone, a small bronze rectangle, and incised and ridged pottery. Two finds were catalogued from this locus; PC20150042, which is an incised impasto sherd, and PC20150043, a cut-out akroteria fragment, which is datable to the Orientalizing period. |
