AM
Work in the morning began by clipping roots across the trench. Once all the roots were clipped and the debris from the stump was cleared, the baulk trim between T 78 and 79 was taken down to the level of the trench in order to have a clearer view of a possible rock feature, if one exists earlier in the stratigraphy. Once it was apparent that the southeast corner was sloping a little more than the rest of the trench, a pick axe was used to lightly pick the corner and the eastern edge of the trench to level it with the rest of the trench. A small rectangular bronze fragment was recovered from the baulk trim bordering T 78 . The trench was swept with a brush in preparation for locus 2 opening photos.
Special Find #1
Rectangular Bronze Fragment
~40.75 S, 105.91 E
~156 CM BD / 27.36 M AE
Once points were taken on the bronze fragment, opening elevations and photos were taken and locus 2 was declared across the entire trench.

Locus 2 is the original topsoil and humus layer on which the old dirt dump was placed. It contains multiple medium to small sized rocks and roots in a lighter medium brown soil than that in locus 1 . Pottery and tile continue to be recovered, however, in less quantities than before. A small piece of plaster was found near the eastern edge of the trench. Additionally, there were a couple fragments of charcoal found near the baulk trim in the southeast corner of the trench. Now that the soil is no longer from the old dirt dump, all soil will be picked up using trowels and later sorted into the wheelbarrow. A small bronze fragment was found in the southeast area of the trench.
Special Find #2
Bronze Flake
40.32 S, 103.8 E
176 cm BD / 27.16 m AE
Pickpasses continued in 3 x 1 meter areas so that the entire trench was picked. After the last pick pass, roots were clipped across the entire trench, pick passes began again beginning in the east and moving to the west in 3 x 1 meter areas north to south.
PM
Work in the afternoon began by picking in the southeast corner that was missed before lunch. Small bits of charcoal are being found along the western edge of the trench in tiny quantities. After the entire trench was picked, pick passes continued again across the entire trench moving east to west and north to south. Another bronze flake was found near the south west corner.
Special Find #3
Bronze Flake
40.45 S, 104.36 E
178 cm BD / 27.14 m AE
Once the trench was fully picked, work was focused on the area
that is higher around the stump. There was another bronze flake recovered from the northeastern corner of the trench.

Once the loose dirt was cleaned up, end of day elevations were taken.

*For the rest of the season, the datum at an elevation of 28.92 m was used and was located north of the trench.
