General remarks | I do not know which loci this step abuts, as it would have been two years ago. This is a step being made in the side of the trench in the NW corner. From the NW corner of the trench we went out one meter to the east and then moved one meter out to the north, away from the trench. So we had an area one meter by one meter connected to the trench. We made the step because it is scary to jump onto the ladder in my deep trench. The step ended when we ran into a cobble surface which was located about 70 cm from where the step began. At the base of the step on the side of our trench we ran into a cobble surface which is equivalent to L1006 from the 2000 excavation season. |

Has note | Contexts excavated in trenches were recorded using the "locus system." A locus is any discrete three-dimensional entity excavated in a trench. The key to the locus system is the recognition that a locus is any one thing. Differences in soil composition or texture are therefore as important as, for example, the difference between a pit and a wall. If two entities were distinct, they were considered separate loci and were therefore assigned separate locus numbers. It should also be noted that every context excavated in a trench was given a locus number and thus the trench itself is made up completely of excavated loci. |
