Description | Locus 60 consists of the two west semicircular niches of the bathroom. The two niches were clearly built together, sharing a back wall and a dividing wall. They are constructed of dressed and hewn ashlars with snecking stones, held together by hydraulic plaster. The interior dimensions of the northern niche are 0.63 m north south by 0.48 m east west by 1.68 m (exposed) in height. The interior dimensions of the southern niche are 0.72 m north south by 0.58 m east west by 1.78 m (exposed) in height. The dividing wall between them is 0.37 m east west by 0.17 m north south by 0.86 m (exposed) in height. These two niches were better preserved than the others in the room, and were originally uncovered to show intact plaster forming semicircles on the upper sections. The prevalence of snecking stones in the walls make it impossible to discern courses. The walls are one row thick. The construction of this space, besides the fine floor, are all of slightly lesser quality than other features of the Bath Complex. This point, combined with the relation of other niches in the room to earlier features, lead us to phase Locus 60 to Stage 3, a long period of additions to the original Bath Complex. If further excavation were to be undertaken, it would be enlightening to further probe some of the niches (though this may necessitate substantial destruction of surrounding features, including the floor of the bathroom). This niche, as well as the others in the bathroom, is thought to lead down to the major east-west vaulted channel exposed to the west in the palaestra and to the east in the well room. This channel is, however, part of the original construction of the Bath Complex. The relation of the features of the bathroom, clearly later in date, and this earlier channel would be important to understanding the technique taken by later renovators to the original features of the Bath Complex. |
