Description | Locus 16 is a contextualized yellowish-brown claylike soil. It is included with carbon and roots of a smaller diameter than in Locus 15. Three large rocks are present in the top of the locus in its western meter. Three, 1m by 1m steps, beginning in the north and descending towards the south, have been left along the western wall of the trench to facilitate entering and exiting the trench. Each step is approximately 50 cm in height. High concentrations of terra cotta, pottery, and bone are present in the soil pack, as well as a moderate amount of vitrified terra cotta, slag, and a few small fragments of amorphous bronze and iron. Cataloged artifacts include decorative architectural terra cottas (20150009, 20150019, 20150030), pottery fragments (20150004, 2015008, 20150014, 20150020), spindle whorl fragments (20150007, 20150010, 20150015), rocchetti fragments (20150005, 20150011, 20150012), metal fragments (20150028), and diagnostic and butchered bone fragments (20150038, 20150003). Based on the material found, it is safe to say that Locus 16 is contemporary with the 6th century Archaic complex. |
