94-95 E/54.5-56 S

24.40 m A.E.

Locus 16

Second and third pick pass completed across the entire area of the trench (except the safety steps). Soil is consistent in color but becoming looser and like fragmenting rock and material being recovered at a high frequency. A fragment of slag found, collected in bulk. While shoveling up the third pick pass, a piece of carbon with a triangular shape and almost complete spindle whorl recovered.

A molded fragment of impasto recovered from the pottery box and made a supplemental find.

Find 6: Fragment of Impasto with Exterior Molding

92-95 E/53-56 S

24.40 m A.E.

Locus 16

Fourth pick pass completed across the entire trench floor. Soil is loosely packed, flakey light brown type in the eastern strip while it remains consistent with Locus 16 in the south where carbon continues to be found. To that end, picking will now only be done in the southern meter until the new soil type is fully revealed there. During the fifth pass (only in the south), fragments of bronze slag with modern breaks found.

Find 7: Bronze Slag Fragments

94.04 E/ 55.11 S

24.44 m A.E.

Locus 16

The soil sorted from the fifth pick pass reveals

far fewer materials and a high concentration of carbon. A sixth pick pass done through the southern extent where Locus 16 soil still remains. Some material and carbon still present, but at lover concentrations. Last pick pass done in the southeastern corner where the claylike Locus 16 soil remains. Simultaneously, three rocks in the southwest which appear to preserve a linear pattern investigated. While picking around them, a large fragment of plaster with a reed impression found.

Find 8: Fragment of Plaster with Reed Impression

92.69E/55.35S

24.33m A.E.

Locus 16

While the stones may very well be an anthropic feature, for the time being then will not be investigated further, but rather left in situ and soil pillared around them. While shoveling up the last pick pass, an impasto rim fragment with molding recovered.

Find 9: Molded Impasto Rim Fragment

93.93E/55.24S

24.35m A.E.

Locus 16

As the new soil has been revealed everywhere, preparations begun to declare a new locus. First, the safety steps are being cut back to about half their widths in order to provide more room for excavation along the circular feature. While cutting back the second step, a fragment

of plaster with reed impression found.

Find 10: Fragment of Plaster with Reed Impression

93.10E/54.72S

24.41m A.E.

Locus 16

Many materials continue to be found during the removal of half of the safety steps, including the full profile of an impasto base.

Find 11: Impasto Base Fragments

93.42E/54.55S

24.35m A.E.

Locus 16

Second safety step fully cut back and leveled. Work begun on cutting back the first, taller step. Many materials included within the soil pack. Several fragments of frieze plaque found which should join with Find 6 of 30 June.

Find 12: Frieze Plaque Fragments with Dentals

93.17E/53.49S

24.85m A.E.

Locus 16

(under life sized)

20150030

20150030

From sorting the soil removed while cutting back the first step, a fragment of slipped pottery found.

Find 13: Slipped Fineware Body Fragment

93.5-94E/53-54S

24.52m A.E.

Locus 16

As the last of the soil was cleaned back from the first safety step, a large stone at least 50cm in width and 40cm in height revealed (its full extent unknown). Next to it or pressed up against it is a large tile, probably the flat portion of a pan tile, of at least 20cm in length and 15cm in height (also of unknown full extent). This stone and tile seem to be turned on their edges and made to stand vertically. Furthermore, they may tentatively align with the three stones in the southwestern

corner (and partially in the lower safety step). Baulk walling commenced in order to clear more space, define the circular feature's profile and prepare for opening the next locus. The baulk wall created along the circular feature's profile still does not fully reveal the feature's profile, but three large stones are visible in the baulk across an area of 50cm below the top stone of the circular feature. From trim along the southern baulk, the head of a rocchetto recovered.

Baulk walling continued along all four baulk walls. Material being saved with Locus 16 artifacts. While baulk walling,

a crucible fragment recovered from the southeastern corner.

Find 15: Crucible Fragment

94.41E/55.34S

24.42m A.E.

Locus 16

Sorting baulk trim in the wheelbarrow, a fragment of worked shell recovered, probably from a bucket of soil shoveled from the southeastern corner.

Locus 16

20150020

20150020

Baulk walling completed and trench scraped down for opening photographs. Opening photographs and elevations of Locus 17 taken:

NW Corner (inside the step, ~93E): 24.37m A.E.

NE Corner: 24.31m A.E.

SE Corner: 24.26m A.E.

SW Corner: 24.27m A.E.

of Locus 17 .

First pick pass initiated in the meter and a half adjacent to the circular feature. Locus 17 is a medium brown to grey, loosely packed and friable soil with small concentrations of carbon and terra cotta, pottery, bone and vitrified terra cotta. The southeastern corner was slightly claylike in the first pick pass. From along the eastern baulk wall, more fragments of slipped pottery, probably associated with Find 1 of today, though that cannot be confirmed since that find was already taken to the magazzino. Because of this and because the fragments were found in a new locus, they will be made their own find for the time being.

Find 19: Fragments of Slipped Fineware

93.87E/54.28S

24.29m A.E.

Locus 17

From a bucket sorted from the northeastern corner, a fragment of lateral sima cavetto recovered.

Find 20: Fragment of Lateral Sima Cavetto

93-95E/53-54.5S

24.32m A.E.

Locus 17

20150017

20150017

Second pick pass completed. Soil is mottled with browns, greys, and yellows and is incredibly flakey. There is still some material included within it, but it is of a lesser concentration and primarily less well preserved. From a buck of soil shoveled from the northern sector, a potential statue fragment recovered.

Find 21: Terra Cotta Statue Fragment

93-95E/53.54.5S

24.29m A.E.

Locus 17

Third pick pass commenced. Soil remains consistent, very flakey and mottled in color. Materials and carbon included in the soil, but at a much lower frequency and at much less level of preservation than artifacts found in Locus 16 . Fourth pick pass done, revealing a very light yellow soil beneath the Locus 17 soil. The soil removed still contains material, especially in the central meter by the eastern baulk. Carbon continues to be included within Locus 17 and is evident in the new light yellow soil. Work ended for the day--the new soil's extent will be defined tomorrow morning.
