The morning was spent taking a 1x2m area in S10, E83-84 down to 53cm below datum, or approx 20-25cm below surface. Whereas numerous small stones were encountered previously in this area, today's excavations produced larger rocks (to 15cm) and some cobbles (to 35cm) that were left in situ. There is no appearance of purposeful deposition. At the lower reaches of the cut, there is a distinct change to a lighter soil (in color9 of a yellowish-olive brown, and also less clayish. This may be early signs of galestra below.
Finds were about 2 1/2 dozen pieces of very worn tile, about 5 of which showed signs of burning. 3 fragments of impasto pottery, very worn, were also recovered.

Continued lowering in S10, E83-84 to 63-65cm b.d. / approx. 30-40cm b.s. Have not encountered a pure galestra, but a mixed soil, light brown/yellowish with pockets of more olive galestra and also more yellow decomposed stone. Finds consisted of thwo pottery fragments. The soil is mostly sterile, but may require another cut for absolute confirmation. removed most of the stones present in previous plan. More stones incovered in S10, E83, but again apparently random.
