Another cut was made in A/3-4 and B/4 in order to make this area level with the rest of the gridded area.  The deepest area is the corner of A/4 which is roughly 30 cm higher than the topsoil level elsewhere.  Complete depth readings were taken along both the eastern and northern baulks in order to get more precise measurements

of the slope of the hill.

  • Supplemental Find 1
  • A/4
  • Impasto rim fragment
  • Was not originally made a find until the significance of its decoration was discovered

AFter depth measurements were taken, topsoil was removed from grid C/4.  Roughly 10 cm of soil was removed, which was brown in color and full of small stones.  In A/4, the deepest area of the cut, the soil became slightly more yellow in color, but due to the dampness it is still difficult to see exactly what the soil's real color is.

Photographs of the cut were taken before work by Chris.

The morning's work produced little in the way of pottery or tile.  Roughly a dozen fragments of coarseware were found.  Of interest was an impasto lip fragment with a rope molded design.  No other noteworthy items were found.  Small worn tile fragments are found rarely.  Pottery fragments are badly worn, too.

PM

Topsoil has been removed from meters A/1-4, B/2-5, and C/3-4.  Due to the slope of the hill and the road our trench sits in, the height of the cut differs in each grid.  Points A/0 and C/4 are 10-15 cm below surface.  A/4 is roughly 40 cm below surface.  Only a few badly worn small pieces of terracotta have been found.  One piece of pottery was found.
