AM
An area south of CB-60 was cleared yesterday and today in preparation for the opening of CB-61. This area was chosen for excavation because a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey conducted in 2015 revealed an anomaly in this area. Therefore, it is hoped that CB-61 and CB-62, approximately one meter to the north of CB-61, will reveal this anomaly. There are three small tree stumps in the southeast corner of the trench and a divot in the central meters of the trench measuring approximately one-half meters in diameter. There are two small stumps in the central divot. A second divot is found in the northwest corner, and is smaller. The whole trench is somewhat flat with a slight gradient that forms a small bowl shape in the northern meters. The eastern and western walls
are very slightly rising. The trench was strung and both elevations and opening photos were taken. Locus 1 was opened throughout the trench.

Opening Elevations:
\x95 \x95 NE corner (57E, 72S) = 24.16 mAE
\x95 \x95 NW corner (54E, 72S) = 24.19 mAE
\x95 \x95 SW corner (54E, 74S) = 24.19 mAE
\x95 \x95 SE corner (57E, 74S) = 24.09 mAE
CB-61 measures 3x2 meters.
A pick pass was made in Locus 1 , from the east going westward. In order to move into stratified deposits, the soil will be hand-sorted into buckets
and dumped into a wheelbarrow. The first pick pass revealed many tree roots, palm-sized stones, and few fragments of pottery, very small. Terra cotta is visible mostly in sizes smaller than a fingernail.
While sorting, a fragment of slag was found (Special Find #1).

A pick pass was conducted in the eastern-central meter of the trench, continuing to dig through top soil. Soil was sorted by hand into buckets, then dumped into a wheelbarrow. Pick passes continued to be done throughout the afternoon,
moving east to west. Soil throughout the trench began as large clumps, but as digging continued the soil became more granular, with the color of the soil showing signs of changing from darker to lighter brown. Notably, inclusions in the soil decreased accompanying the changes in soil. Additionally, a packing of leaves was recovered beneath an elongated piece of bark. To the south of the packing was a noticeable increase of root-rot. While sorting, another piece of slag was recovered (Special find #2).
