A.M.
A cut was begun in meters D-F/79-80, extending the depth of the trench in these meters to ca. 125-130cm. The soil remained grey-brown in color and contained some small rocks. One quarter of a box of impasto and coarseware sherds and one cassetta of worn tile were recovered from the grey-brown soil.
A 10cm cut was also taken in meters J-M/68. The soil in these meters was dark grey in color and contained a high concentration of carbon -- particularly in meters J-K/68. In addition, the rock concentration encountered friday afternoon in this area was found to extend further south into meters K.L/68. Further cleaning of the trench floor revealed the rock concentration
to be composed of a densely packed stratum of both small and large rocks and some -- mostly small -- fragments of tile. The surface of the concnetration, moreover, occurs at a depth of ca. 175-190cm. One half cassetta of small pieces of worn tile and a few impasto sherds were recovered from the grey-black soil around the rocks.
P.M.
The cut begun this morning in meters D-F/78-79 was completed to a depth of ca. 125-130cm. A second 10cm. cut was then begun in these same meters to a depth of ca. 140cm. The soil in both cuts remained grey-brown in color and contained some small rocks. In addition, the area around the larger rocks uncovered along the northern edge of D/78-79 was again swept and cleared. Cleaing revealed that the rocks appear to form the southern limit of a concentration extending into the northern baulk of the trench for an unknown distance.. Further excavation of the trench to the north will be necessary to determine both the extent and possible significance of
the concentration. One cassetta of small pieces of worn tile and one box of impasto and coarseware sherds were discovered in the grey-brown soil.
Excavation was also continued in meters J-L/69 in order to determine the eastern boundary of the rock concentration previously uncovered in meters J-L/68. Light picking and brushing of the area revealed the extention of the concentration throughout the entire area of J-L/69. Moreover, the character of the concentration remained the same in that newely excavated area, consisting of a densely packed stratum of small and large rocks with some tile around them. Again the soil around the rocks was dark grey in color and contained some carbon. One half of a cassetta of
worn tile and a few impasto sherds were discovered in the dark grey soil.
