A.M.

An additional 10cm cut was taken in meters D-F/78-79, extending the depth of the trench in these meters to ca. 105-110cm.  The soil in the cut was grey-brown in colro with many roots and small rocks.  In addition, several large rocks were uncovered along the northern edge of the cut in meters D/78-79 beginning at a depth of ca. 88cm.  It is not yet clear whether these rocks are part of a concentration or, instead, are part of an isolated formation.  One cassetta of tile, consisting primarily of small worn pieces, and one quarter of a box of impasto and coarseware sherds were discovered in the grey-brown soil.

Work also continued in clearing down and defining the tile concentration exposed in meters D-E/71-72.  Cleaning of the trench floor revealed the extention of the tiles as far as the western half of meters D-E/73.  Excavation and troweling beyond this point in the easter half of meters D-E/73 and in meters D-E/74 has thus far revealed no extention of the tiles further east.  Instead, there still remains a heavy concentration of rocks in these meters.  In addition, further cleaning of the northern baulk of meters D/71-74, also showed that the stratum of mottled soil encountered below the rock line in meters D-E/71-72, extends no further than the eastern portion of meters D-E/73.  More

precisely, it would appear to form the matrix of the tile formation.  This change from a grey-brown to a mottled soil occurs at a depth of ca. 90-95cm.  The current depth of the trench in meters D-E/71-74 is ca. 120-125cm.

P.M.

An additional cut was begun in meters D-E/78-79, extending the depth of the trench in this area to ca. 120cm.  The soil in these meters again remained grey-brown in color with many rocks and small roots.  In addition, the group of large rocks uncovered along the northern edge of D/78-79 were swept for further definition.  Although these rocks would appear to constitute a random formation, they will be left in place until their depth and position can be more clearly determined.  One cassetta of worn tile fragments and one half box of impasto pottery were discovered in D-F/78-79.

Excavation was also reinitiated in meters H-K/68 in order to complete the profile of the

western trench baulk along these meters.  A datum point was established at a point 20cm above ground level on the northwestern picchetto of meter H/68.  All subsequent measurements in this area will be taken from this point.  All the erosional soil which had colliated along the base of the trench baulk was then removed.  The western baulk along H-M/68 was shoved and cleaned.  A 10cm cut was then begun in meters H-K/68, extending the depth of the trench in these meters to ca. ( measurements blank) cm.  The soil in meters H-I/68 was \'medium\' browm in color and contained a few small rocks.  One quarter of a cassetta of worn tile and a few pieces of impasto were discovered in the dark brown soil.  The soil in meters J-K/68, however,

was dark grey in color and contained a high concentration of carbon.  In addition, at a depth of ca. 180cm. there was encountered a dense concentration of rocks.  The floor of the trench was then swept, revealing a number of small tile fragments among the rocks.  One cassetta of worn tile fragments, including several burned pieces, and one half of a box of worn impasto sherds were recovered from the dark grey soil.
