Because of a high preservation level of bronze recovered from CA 72, a soil sample was taken. This sample came from the western meter near the northern end, where both the bronze vessel fragment and dragon fibula were previously recovered, and was taken to the magazzino. While recovering the sample, several fragments of pottery recovered, as well as a worked antler fragment, possibly an antler spindle whorl.

Locus 2

In the areas where tree stumps were removed last Wednesday and Thursday, hand axes used to level down to the elevation of the surrounding trenches and possibly uncover rock features. During cleaning terra cotta, bone, and pottery recovered. One large fragment of slag, possibly a crucible fragment, uncovered. The soil is also carbon included in the area which is the northern wall shared with CA 73.

Locus 2

After coordinates were taken, it was determined the iron actually came from within CA 73, which was not initially recognized due to the nature of open excavation. While area in the north being defined and dropped to the elevation of surrounding trenches, the same done along the western wall to level it down to the elevation of CA 70. Light pick axing done in order to level. Soil pancaking somewhat during picking, and soil loosely packed. Soil consistent with Locus 2 , sorted and cleaned from the trench. During cleaning recovered pottery and bone, as well as one fragment of bronze.

Also during cleaning in the western meter, a piece of plaster with three finished edges recovered.

Locus 2

Cleaning along the north continued with soil remaining consistent with Locus 2 , sorted and removed from the trench. While cleaning, found bone fragment with cut marks.

PM

Hand picking and defining continued in the northern section of the trench. Soil remains consistent with Locus 2 soil, sorted and cleaned from the trench. Pottery, bone, terra cotta, slag, and vitrified terra cotta being found. One large fragment of slag and one possible crucible fragment recovered during cleaning.

Locus 2

While definition continued along the north, hand picks and trowels also used to define a group of rocks seemingly ringing the base of the large living tree along the southern baulk wall. The potential ring is appearing on the eastern side of the tree, which has a 30cm buffer left around it. The soil removed is consistent with Locus 2 and contains terra cotta, pottery, and vitrified terra cotta. Baulk walling is also being done along the eastern baulk wall. Terra cotta and pottery being found, collected as

baulk trim finds. During definition around the tree, one piece of Medieval pottery found in a higher level of the roots.
