Work begun this morning in both Locus 4 and Locus 6 using hand picks and trowels. In Locus 4 the goal is to drop the elevation of the soil throughout but especially around the large rocks in the northern meter. As stated previously, those rocks extend into CA 73, but additionally were found to turn perpendicularly within CA 72. Their full extent has still not been investigated and it is unclear at this point whether there are more rocks and in which direction they might be oriented. Additionally, attention will be given to removing soil from around the root systems of the stumps. Soil remains consistent with Locus 4 , sorted and cleaned from the trench. Small concentrations of terra cotta and pottery recovered. In Locus 6 the aim is to reveal whether the stone and terra cotta packing uncovered in CA 73 extends southward into CA 72. It appears to be present in the northern meter of CA 72, but has not been revealed in the southern two meters. The packing in CA 73 appears to slope downward from north to south, and if this is case also on CA 72 a packing feature may not yet have been caught because the soil has not been removed to that
level. Soil remains consistent with Locus 6 , sorted and cleaned from the trench. Small concentrations of terra cotta, pottery, and bone recovered. A few stones and fragments of terra cotta are being revealed as soil is removed at a deeper level in the second meter from the north. During cleaning, one fragment of vitrified terra cotta recovered. Because several fragment of vitrified terra cotta have been recovered, it will be collected in bulk.

One bucket from Locus 6 sieved, nothing recovered. A bucket from Locus 4 sieved, two fragments of bone, two fragments of pottery, and one fragment of terra cotta found. During cleaning in Locus 4 , one fragment of vitrified terra cotta discovered, with several modern breaks.

27.30m A.E.
One bucket from Locus 4 sieved and no artifacts recovered. During troweling in Locus 4 one slag fragment and one fragment of vitrified terra cotta recovered. Due to the frequency of the recovery of vitrified terra cotta, it will now be collected in bulk.

27.20m A.E.
Find 9: Vitrified Terra Cotta Fragment
66.94E/36.82S
27.14m A.E.
In Locus 4 the soil has been lowered in the northern meter between five and fifteen centimeters to reveal several terra cotta fragments. The large rock feature does not appear to continue any further to the west and the southern extent of it has not yet been fully explored as of yet.
Terra cotta, pottery, and bone are being recovered. Many of the artifacts are being found within the stumps and roots. Some carbonized grape seeds are also being found around the large stump. Three fragments of slag were recovered from Locus 4 and because of its high rate of occurrence slag from Locus 4 will now be collected in bulk.

One bucket from Locus 6 sifted, no artifacts recovered. In Locus 6 the soilÂ’s elevation has been dropped between five and fifteen centimeters revealing more stones and some
terra cotta in a loose packing.
One bucket from Locus 4 sieved and one fragment of terra cotta found.
In Locus 4 work commenced south of the tree stumps using the pick axe lightly to break up the soil. Terra cotta found in small concentrations but no other artifacts. A bucket from Locus 6 sieved and no artifacts recovered. A bucket from Locus 4 sifted but no artifacts found. During cleaning in Locus 4 a small largely intact jaw fragment found and it was decided to take points on it prior to its inspection by the bone specialist.

27.07m A.E.
A bucket sieved from Locus 6 , one fragment of terra cotta and two fragments if pottery found. A bucket sieved from Locus 4 and no artifacts found. Work ended in the morning by clipping roots.
PM
Work continued in Locus 4 and Locus 6 using hand picks and trowels. Work in Locus 4 focused on lowering the elevation of
the soil in order to further define the rock features in the northern meter and to reveal any possible rock features in the southern portion. Work in Locus 6 continues to focus on revealing the extent of the rock and terra cotta packings, which appear to slope downward from CA 73. Additionally, soil continues to be removed from the area around the tree stumps in Locus 6 so that they may be removed at some point in the future. One bucket from Locus 6 was sieved and two fragments of pottery were recovered. During cleaning in Locus 6 a fragment of ridged pottery was found.
