E. Nielsen checked the two bones which had undergone the PVA emulsion treatment - they were fine. They are still sitting and drying.
Bone A (Box 4): the two halves were reglued and the excess glue was removed with acetone.
Both bones (Bone A, Box 4 and Femur, Box 1) which had the PVA treatment are hard and have returned to a stable condition. The expansion due to PVA emulsion - capillary action - did not result in any destruction.
Bone B (Box 5): Cleaned the bone with alcohol to prepare it for PVA emulsion treatment. It was decided to reduce the time the bone would be in the PVA treatment - 15 minutes on a side-turned - another 15 minutes.
The PVA emulsion was strengthened (to 15% by volume).
Bone B was placed in the emulsion at 10:06, turned and removed at 10:42. The excess emulsion was removed by cotton, dabbed in water, and the bone was left to dry.
From time to time, the bone was slightly moved to prevent it from sticking to the plastic bubble sheet. One or two breaks showed, result of expansion.
Bone A (Box 5): Using the Klister glue worked on joining pieces.
Bone A (Box 5): Continued to join pieces. Had to rest the bone on wads of cotton to stabilize the piece.
Noted the two features of linea aspera and notrind feramen.
Bagged and labelled fragments (32) - one large, the rest small to tiny.
Consolidated the bone in PVA emulsion.
- Placed bone in PVA emulsion at 5:02, turned over after 15 minutes (5:17) and removed at 5:34.
- Left to dry - seems okay - turned over to prevent sticking to plastic.
Suggestion - a turning bell for a reminder to turn bone over, etc.
