Bone A (Box 4):

  1. Clean with acetone
  2. Dry
  3. Clean with alcohol
  4. Dry
  5. PVA treatment

Procedure for PVA treatment:

  1. Place PVA emulsion in tray. PVA 15% emulsion (vinavil) by volume
  2. Place bone in tray for about 45 minutes.
  3. Watch to make sure the PVA emulsion is absorbed to the top of the bone.
  4. White should come all the way to the top.
  5. Wipe white risidue of with cotton when removing bone (damp).

Femur shaft (Box 1)

  1. Cleaned with alcohol-water solution - the exterior
  2. Dripped alcohol in the interior to dry to wash out clopped earth. This did not work so used the alcohol-water (50:50) solution and sprayed it in with a nasal spray bottle - poking the dirt alternately with an end of a long paint brush and a dental pick.
  3. Let dry before continuing to clean interior as the bone appears to be quite damp.

Summary of treatment for Bone A - Box 4 (humerus shaft)

  1. Cleaned with alcohol-water solution (50:50)
  2. dried
  3. glued
  4. cleaned with acetone (removal of extra glue)
  5. dried
  6. cleaned with alcohol
  7. dried
  8. PVA emulsion treatment

P.M.

Bone A (Box 4) - humerus shaft:

The bone had to soak in the PVA emulsion over lunch. Removed from PVA emulsion at 1:37 (put in about 11:30) and placed on bubbled plastic to dry. Removed excess emulsion with cotton swab dampened with water. The bone broke while wiping off excess PVA.

The deterioration of this bone progressed to such an extent because of its porousity -- resulted in spongy softness.

The absorption of PVA caused the bone to expand to such a degree that it appears to be broken at the joint. Previously held together with Klister (glue).

Femur (Box 1):

This bone was placed in the PVA emulsion at 1:40 and removed at 2:45. It was then left to dry. It appeared to be in a better condition than Bone A (Box 4).

Cleaned the interior of Bone B (Box 5) with a bottle brush which removed the excess dirt. Had earlier cleaned Femur (Box 1) with this brush and successfully removed problem rootlets and stuck dirt.

5:10 E. Nielsen: The procedure of emersing the bone in PVA emulsion works, but it must be used with caution. Femure (Box 1) is fine lok. Will compare the two bones tomorrow.
