Skull Y
Photographed from various angles.
Cleaning out dirt and defining the bones, consolidating with PVA emersion (15% in vol.) when necessary.
Loose pieces of skull: attempted to glue with UHU, but not successful at this time.
Do not like UHU glue with skeletal material as it takes too long to set (20-30 minutes). E. Nielsen suggested taping the pieces during the gluing process, but I do not like this idea as most pieces are too fragile. The four remaining tubes of Kiksten glue are being saved for on the side work and cannot be used. This shall put off gluing until someone is assigned to me. Shall spend the time in pre-excavation activity in skeleton skull Y.
Skull Y
Began removal of bones.
First: ? lower arm bones - consolidated with PVA emersion (15% in vol.) immediately upon removal from the earth.
A second bone - lower arm? - is lodged under the skull (zysomatic bone). Suggests that not this individual's arm as the body was laid out in a prone position. The other skeleton was touching this one? A man and a woman burial?
E. Nielsen speculated that the spears might have been part of a sling to carry the two bodies.
Found some skull bone underneath - thin and fragile.
Using an eye dropper filled with water for better control. Continue to carefully unearth bone.
The lower arm bone (under the zygomatic bone) split in half. Removed one part and consolidated it with PVA emulsion (15% in vol.). Brushed other part in situ with PVA emulsion and let it dry.
Lucy - gluing with UHU the loose skull fragments.
P.M.
Photographed skull Y - BG 82-4. Finished role.
Lisa: working on section of skull Y (?) which was found overturned and consolidated in situ.
Method -
- Remove each fragment separately using pin vice and dripping water (nasal spray) to soften earth.
- Clean piece with alcohol-water (or alcohol if fragile) solution (50:50) and consolidate with PVA emulsion (15% in vol.).
- Line up for attachment and glue
Lisa removed and cleaned several fragments (4 larger and 2 tiny).
Continued work on Skull Y.
Note: The presence of several small bone ends protruding from the edge of the right side - from the mandible up to the cranium.
Photographed left side - crocen and mandible? BG 82-5: 1-12
"Lower arm bone" turns out to be a left clavicle and a section of scapula.
The decision was made to start removing the cranium at this point.
First removed zygomatic bone (left). Had to brush a corner with PVA emulsion (15% in vol.) to prevent breakage.
Frontal bone (lower left part) by orbital surface - nicely intact - with a second frontal piece.
