Work began in meter U/53 with a 15 cm cut taking the level from 50-65 cm. However, a concentration of wet tile, plaster, and pottery slowed excavation to hand tools and brushes. The area wll be allowed to dry until this afternoon.
A 25 cm cut was taken in meters U/54-55, taking this level from 40-65 cm from groundline. Only a few fragments of pottery were found.
The stump in U/54 was removed and cleaned. Only 6 pieces of pottery were found. The soil in the stump was dark brown and fine with a red cast as opposed to the dry soil with gray/green pockets of schist found in the 25 cm cut around the stump.
The remainder of the morning was spent on a 20-22 cm cut in T/54-55, the area behind the stump. The entire
meter squares were not finished. The soil in this cut (much like that in the stump) was fine brown with a red to gold cast. Minimal amounts of pottery and tile were found in this cut, which brings T/54-55 to [no information given] from the relative groundline.
There were no finds.
