A 10 cm cut was taken in meters V/53-55. The soil here was hard packed and dry. No pottery was found in this cut and only a few small piece of tile. A large piece of pan tile with flange did appear in T/52, but is perpendicular to the plane of the cut and cannot be removed.
A second cut was made in meters V/53-55 bringing the level to a depth of 60 cm from the groundline. Large pieces of pan tile were found in this cut in meter V/53 - approximately 1/4 of a cassette. These are being saved to look for a complete length or width. The soil continues to be hard packed but is more red with a higher tile content. A few pieces of pottery are coming up
throughout meters V/53-55, approximately 1/3 of a latte box of impasto and a few bucchero fragments.
A third cut was made in meters V/53-55 bringing this level down to 70 cm. More pan tile fragments were found in V/53 and the soil here is redder and softer. As the cut moves east into V/54-55 toward the tree and large stump, the soil becomes harder and gray/green.
Approximately 1/3 a latte box of pottery and 1/4 a cassette of tile were found. There were no finds for the morning.
PM
A 10 cm cut was taken in U/53 and the western half of U/54. Approximately one dozen pan tile fragments came out of U/53. This cut brought these meters
down to a depth of 50 cm from the relative groundline. The soil continued to be hard packed with pockets of gray/green schist.
A second cut was begun in U/53-54 taking the level down to 65 cm from the relative ground line. 1/2 a latte box of pottery was found in this cut. The soil began to take on a golden red color as we moved north and was not as dry.
We stopped work early for a lecture. There were no finds for the day.
