- D-E/29-30: 5 boxes of tiles
Three workers (Angiolini, Capitani, and Solideo) engaged all day in lifting the tile layer containing statue fragments, in grids D-E/29-30. For this tile layer, see p. 53 .
Pottery very scarce. Grids D-E/29-30 completed down to hard light surface right below layer mentioned yesterday (ca. 30 cm below removed ground surface). Work went on slowly and carefully; the fragments and tiles were lifted una per volta by the workers and handed to me.
Great concentration of statue fragments in these grids. Filled six boxes. Work proceeded from south towards north; cassetta numbers corresponded to that movement northwards in the grids. Statue
fragments seem to cover these grids rather evenly. Finds near the borders to grids F/29-30 and E/28 indicate that more fragments might be expected still further to the north, but also to the west. Apparently no shoulder or head parts were found. One or more statues?
The tiles from the area filled 5 boxes. These were dumped apart from the normally used dumping place, to allow extra check.
