  • D-F/25-26: 1 box of tiles
  • D-F/25-26 stonefill, first cut: 1 box of tiles
  • D-F/25-26 stonefill, second cut: 1/2 box of tiles

Work in DEF/25-26: thick and rather compact stone-earth pack over most of the area.

In area EF/25-26, we reached a level of ab. 40 cm below ground surface, on the 19th of July ( see p. 25 ).  For the hard and compact till of small stones and earth encountered in this area down to the level mentioned, see p. 24: sketch .  Work now proceeds downwards in same grids, at the same time including D/25-26.

Starting from north in grids F/25-26, in the first cut of a layer of ab. 40 cm, thickness of stone-earth fill was removed.

When work proceeded southwards into grids E-D/25-26, it was noticed that the fill became more compact and the stones bigger.  Some stones 20-30 cm but seemed too loosely packed to constitute a regular wall.  Stones were getting more scarce in southern part of D/25-26.  Pottery and tiles scarce.

In next cut in the same area, we concentrated upon removing just the loose soil around the compact stone pack, with the intention of trying to better establish its character and extension.  In grid F/26, we reached a level of ab. [no information given] cm below ground surface, in grid D/25 ca. [no information given] .

The earth-stone fill was found to extend essentially over areas D/25, E/25-26, and F/26.  In south-east corner of D/26, a new yellowish, slightly carbon-mixed stratum was found, devoid of stones, two tile fragments lying on its upper rather hard surface.  Area F/25 also seemed to lack stone-fill; same stratum found here as northwards in G-J/25-26, but not som any tiles.  Perhaps this yellowish stratum continues under the stonepack to reach the somewhat higher level visible in D/26.  Big rim frag-

ment of dolium in E-F/25.

The biggest stones of the earth-stone fill were found on border between D and E 25-26.

Some more tiles in this second cut.

Stone-earth fill in D-F/25-26 characteristics:

  • Tiles, bones, and pottery scarce.
  • Four pieces of clay plaster in D-F/25-26 second cut; also some pieces lower down, apparently near the border between stone area and non-stone area.
  • Part of the fallen north wall?
