AM
Work begins this morning with a pick pass through the easternmost meters of Locus 10 . Soil is slightly damp and compacted from the rain early in the morning, but is able to be worked in. The pick pass reveals that Locus 10 is characterized by having many stones, averaging fist-sized to pebble-sized. As in Locus 9 , few artifacts apart from some terra cotta have been found. Soil is hand-sorted over buckets and dumped into a wheelbarrow.
Pick passes were made in the central and western meters to complete a trench-wide pass. After the dampened soil had been removed, another pass was made in the eastern third of the trench. Soil is a yellowish gray with sandy, claylike texture. A large fragment from a pithos, measuring about 15 cm in length and 8 cm in width, was recovered form this pass. Stones appear
mostly in the northeastern meters, but scattered and seemingly unrelated. In the northwest corner also was found a few bone fragments.
Another pick pass in the central meters of the trench revealed a frieze plaque fragment (Special find #1).
Special find #1:
- Locus 10
- 22.86 mAE
- 73.34 S / 55.37 E

Finds in this second trench-wide pick pass have exposed more pottery than before. While sorting, a sherd of slipped pottery was recovered (Special find #2).

- 72.41 S / 55.57 E

The afternoon began with a pick pass in the eastern extent of the trench. Soil color remains relatively consistent, albeit slightly less blue and more olive. However, in content, soil seems different. Far more stones are present than in Locus 8, and here stones are larger than those in Locus 9 .
Another pass was made in the western flank of the trench. Soil remains relatively consistent to the prior pass. While sorting, a fragment of vitrified terra cotta was recovered (Special find #3).
Special find #3:
- Locus 10
- 22.77 mAE
- 73.20 S / 55.51 E
- Vitrified terra cotta
A third pass was made in the eastern flank of the trench. Soil color and content remain consistent. While sorting, a large bone fragment (Special find #4) was recovered.
Special Find #4:
- Locus 10
- 22.78 mAE
- 72.39 S / 56.50 E
- Large bone fragment
-
Another pass was conducted in the western extent of the trench. Soil color and content remain consistent, and soil continues to be sorted by hand into buckets, then dumped into the southwest dirt dump.
While leveling the western extent of the trench, a large fragment of a pithos was recovered (Special find #5).
Special find #5:
- Locus 10
- 22.73 mAE
- 73.63 S / 54.51 E
- Large pithos fragment
