Daily Logs

6 July 2015, Monday

-AM-

Today's weather is clear and sunny with a later forecast of high hear and high humidity.

Opening Elevations:

NW: 26.80m.AE

NE: 26.78m.AE

SW: 26.58m.AE

SE: 26.65m.AE

The day began with a pick pass beginning in the southern 1m x 2m strip running directly along the southern wall, pulling back to the north. Methodology will remain the same as last week, picked dirt will be sorted by hand and placed into buckets which will then be dumped into a wheelbarrow and taken to the designated dirt dump located to the south of the Medieval Road. The soil continues to be full of roots and small and larger rocks. While clearing the dirt from the pick, a shard of incised pottery (Special find

#1) was found.

Special Find #1: Incised Pottery Shard

Elevation: 26.63m.AE

Coordinates: 104.73E/46.92S

Locus 2

After the dirt from that pick was cleared, a second pick was done through the subsequent 2m x 1m strip, again, pulling north. Once the dirt from that pass was cleared, a third pick was completed through the following 2m x 1m strip directly to the north. While clearing the pick, a piece of plaster with a reed impression (Special find #2), was found.

Special find #2: Plaster with Reed Impression

Elevation: 26.57m.AE

Coordinates: 105.16E/46.19S

Locus 2

Once the loose dirt from that pick was cleared, another pass was completed through the 2m x 1m strip running along the northern wall of the trench. The soil continues to be full of roots and small rocks. Once the loose dirt from that pass was cleared, another pass was initiated in the 2m x 1m strip running along the southern wall. Large rocks are becoming apparent in this section of the trench and seem to align with those of T - 75 and 2014's T - 66, but further investigation is needed. Once the dirt from that pick was cleared, it was decided that it would be prudent to avoid the rocks

that are present in the southern 2m x 2m extent of the trench, instead excavating this area with hand picks. Thus, the remaining portion of the trench that has indications of rocks will be passed over and the net pick was conducted through the first 1m strip of the northern 2m x 2m section of the trench. The soil continues to be full of roots and small rocks. Small amounts of pottery are present as well as small amounts of bone. Larger pieces of terracotta are prevalent. While a pick was completed through the northernmost 2m x 1m extent of the trench, light hand picking was done through the southern extent where the larger rocks were present. While clearing the dirt, a piece of perforated terracotta (Special Find #3), was found.

Special Find #3: Perforated Terracotta

Elevation: 26.57m.AE

Coordinates: 105.16E/47.33S

Locus 2

-PM-

Because of the rocks through the 2m x 2m extent of the trench, a pick was completed through the 2m x 1m strip of the trench running along the northern extent of the wall while simultaneously a hand pick was used in the southern extent in an effort to define the larger rocks. Once the loose dirt from that pick was cleared, another one was completed through the same area in an effort to level the trench. The southern 2m x 2m portion of the trench will continue to be excavated by hand pick. The larger rocks that were visible through the southern extent of the trench

have been revealed more and seem to be more closely compacted than the rocks that were present in the same extent last week. Once the dirt was cleared from the trench, baulk walling and root clipping was done in an effort to clean up the trench.

Closing Elevations:

NW: 26.72m.AE

SW: 26.56m.AE

SE: 26.44m.AE

Daily Totals:
