Daily Log

AM

We are continuing down in the southwestern corner of the trench trying to remove the last of the Locus 22 soil.  We have no uncovered the new soil in the whole area of Locus 22 west of the bedrock.  The new soil west of the bedrock will be declared locus 23 .  The coordinates are 1.70m W - 6.70m S, 1.27m W - 8.10m S, 2.60m W - 8.50m S, 3.10m W - 6.75m S.  The locus is characterized by a very sandy soil which seems as if it is being produced by a crubly disintegrating rock.  There seems to be little or no material in this soil.  It has a munsell designation of 2.5 Y 5/6 light olive brown.

The new soil in the area of Locus 22 east of the bedrock between the coordinates .75m W - 6.20m S, 1.30m W - 6.30m S, 1.00m W - 8.05m S, .35m W - 8.00m S will be designated Locus 24 .  This locus is characterized by a very hard soil which is made up of mostly of compacted small rocks.  There seems to be little material in the soil.  Its munsell designation is 2.5 Y 5/4 light olive brown.  There is a section of bedrock separating these two loci.

Elevations

Pick passes across Locus 23 .  No material is being turned up.  It now seems that this locus is sterile and now more work will be done in it.  We will now move on to Locus 24 in the afternoon.

PM

We have begun picking in locus 24 .  It appears that in the northern meter of Locus 24 we have been hitting bedrock and there has been no material in it.  On the other hand in the southern meter we have been encountering soil with rocks but there is also carbon and a few pieces of terracotta in it.  After picking through the southern meter of Locus 24 it appears that we may be encountering the same sandy sterile soil we found in locus 23 .  Now it appears we are not in the same sandy sterile soil as we have found some terracotta and pottery.  While sorting a pick pass an incised rim was found (Find #1).  We will now make on more pick pass in the northern meter of Locus 24 to see if there is anything

under the rocks.  Nothing found in that area so we will only continue in the southern meter.

Material Totals

  • 4 Pieces terracotta - Locus 22
  • 1/2 bowl terracotta - Locus 23
  • 1/8 box pottery - Locus 23
  • 1/2 bowl terracotta - Locus 24
  • Few pieces pottery - Locus 24
