Daily Logs

17 th July, 2014

AM

Work began by scraping back the soil in the northeastern meter, attempting to reveal the flaky light yellow soil throughout the trench. While the soil in locus 3 has the light yellow flaky soil continuously, the southern 1 meter area just to the west remains a yellow clay like soil consistant with locus 2 . It was decided that once locus 3 is scraped to expose the light yellow flaky soil, the rocks left in the 1x1 meter area where the locus 2 feature was, will be defined and removed since the soil in the same area is still a dark brown dense soil. In addition, if any rocks in locus 2 are not stacked, they will also be removed. Thus, the area where

the new locus will be is approximately 1.3 meters from the eastern line and approximately 96 centimeters from the south. This new locus will be approximately 4 meters in length and 2 meters wide. This will be locus 4 and consists of all the rocks in T-60 as well as both a dark brown dense soil in the locus 2 feature and a yellowish clay like soil to the west. The rocks are roughly medium to large sized.

Locus 4 Trench Drawing:

Locus 4

The soil in locus 4 is a yellowish brown dense clay like soil with rocks and roots throughout.

Opening photos and elevations were taken and work began by defining the rocks with trowels and systematically lifting them out of they become loose.

Locus 4 Opening Elevations:

1. 88cm BD / 28.40 m AE

2. 97 cm BD / 28.31 m AE

3. 87 cm BD / 28.41 m AE

4. 98 cm BD / 28.30 m AE

5. 100 cm BD / 28.28 m AE

6. 89 cm BD / 28.39 m AE

Due to the shape of the locus, elevations will be numbered and are taken from the corners of locus 4. Since this locus is below locus 2 , every third bucket will be sieved. In addition, work will be halted in locus 3 for the time being to determine the nature of the rocks in locus 4 . Materials remain sparse and predominantly worn pieces of terracotta tile and pottery. 1 bucket was sieved and two were dumped after all of the loose soil was picked up and roots were clipped. End of day elevations were taken.

End of Day Elevations:

1. 93 cm BD / 28.35 m AE

2. 97 cm BD / 28.31 m AE

3. 94 cm BD / 28.34 m AE

4. 100 cm BD / 28.28 m AE

5. 101 cm BD / 28.27 m AE

6. 89 cm BD / 28.39 m AE
