Daily Log

AM

We are continuing to level the trench in preparation for the declaration of a new locus.  A new locus is declared over the entire area where locus 13 was found.  This new locus 14 is characterized by a darker brown soil with some organic material in the soil as well.  This new soil is designated Locus 14 and has a munsell designation of 10 YR 3/3 Dark Brown.  There is a large amount of carbon in the soil and it seems some burning may have taken place there.

Elevations Locus 14 A.D.

  • NE - .46m
  • NW - .48m
  • SE - .40m
  • SW - .43m

Pick pass across the trench in order to uncover the tile spread we expect to be there.  The tile spread has been uncovered and we are beginning to define its extent.  Work also continued in Locus 12 with pick passes across the area.  While sorting a loom weight fragment was uncovered (Find #1).  Also, a piece of lead was uncovered (Find #2).  A concentration of tile located in the western sector of Locus 12 .

PM

We are continuing to define the tile in Locus 14 .  Additionally, we are trowelling in Locus 9 to try to reveal the spread there.  The idea is we will bring all of the extensions down to the same strata then excavate them together as one unit.  While troweling in Locus 14 a loom weight fragment was uncovered (Find #3).  In Locus 12 , work during the afternoon will focus on the area bordering the road.  This area will be cleared for three meters extending one meter on both sides of Locus 12 . Locus 14 has now been brought down to the level of the tile spread.  The focus is now on bringing the rest of Locus 9 down to the same soil.
