19 July 2011

AM

CB-45 was established with the following coordinates assigned off the master grid:

North east (8 west, 29 south)

North west (11 west, 29 south)

South west (11 west, 31 south)

South east (8 west, 31 south)

Work began on CB-45 today by clearing the surface of the trench of any sticks, stones, and excess foliage. After stringing the trench, photos were taken and locus 1 was declared. Locus 1 is the top soil humus layer, characterized by its dark brown color and intermixing with small stones, branches, and roots.

Once locus 1 was opened, the first pick pass occurred in the western half of the trench. So far a moderate amount of terracotta and a very small amount of pottery has been collected when sorting the dirt. A small piece of worked chert was unearthed after the first pick pass (special find 1).

Special Find 1: Worked Chert

30.76 meters South/10.16 meters West

30.07 meters absolute elevation

A small modern bullet was also found while excavating locus 1 (special find 2).

Special Find 2: Modern Bullet

30.35 meters South/9.61 meters West

After one full pick pass a full bowl of terracotta and a very small amount of pottery has been sorted. It has also become evident that the soil is increasingly light brown with yellow mottling. Because of this soil change, the trench was scraped and the baulk walls were trimmed in preparation for opening locus 2 .

PM

Locus 2 was opened after taking closing photos of locus 1 and opening elevations for locus 2. Locus 2 has the following elevations:

North east: 30.02 meters absolute elevation

South west: 30.01 meters absolute elevation

South east: 30.07 meters absolute elevation

North west: 30.09 meters absolute elevation

Locus 2 soil is characterized by its light brown and yellow mottling. It is intermixed with stones and roots. The trench was picked in the western half of the trench only. From this pick pass, a half of a bowl of terracotta was unearthed and a very small amount of pottery.

While clearing dirt, a lateral sima fragment was excavated (special find 3).

It appears that there is an outcropping of rock in the north western corner of the trench. The rest of the trench will be picked to explore if the rock outcropping extends across the trench.
