Work on the topsoil cut was continued into C-G 94-99. This area, because it had been used as a dump site for excavations of the Upper Building, yielded large amounts of plaster and tile (2 1/2 cassette of tile and 5 1/2 of plaster). Pottery was more common than yesterday (2 boxes), but all pieces were worn and fairly small. There were several pieces of discolored (burnt?) bone found. The soil has patches of red (probably the result of eroding plaster) and burn (mos likely the result of modern burning) in a greyish-brown base. Analysis of the stratigraphy shown by the 1987 balks indicates that below this hard topsoil (packed down by a front end lodder brought in in 1986 to move the above mentioned dumps) lies a layer of ancient topsoil, then yellow clay, a red burn layer with carbon pockets and plaster, and a brownish layer.
While most areas of the cut yielded only the tile and pottery mentioned above (finds 1-7), the northernmost end of the trench in grid C-94 showed one piece of ivory incised with the guilloche pattern (find 8).
Tiles found in this portion of T26 are being dumped in the tile pile directly north of the trench, in backfiled T23. A plaster dump is east of the tile dump, and immediately adjacent to it.

P.M.
Work continued in the topsoil cut, resulting in one box of pottery, 1/2 of a cassetta of tile, and one small piece of bronze (find 9). All excavation ended at 4:00 in order for the first year students to atend a lecture down the hill.
