The topsoil cut started yesterday in H-L 97-99 was completed, yielding 2 cassette of tile but very small amounts of pottery (1/2 box). Plaster was scattered but common, including several oddly shaped lumps apparently formed by hand (see find #1), small badly worn pieces, and a piece showing red marks and three finished edges. (find #2).
The clean-up work along the 1987 balks was continued into H-93, to expose the edge of the protective plastic laid down at the end of that season. A possible piece of ivory and a piece of bronze were found in the fill or washout (finds 3 and 4). Most other recoveries were of
small, badly worn pieces of tile (1/2 cassetta), worn piences of pottery, and burnt wood in small amounts.
P.M.
Work on the topsoil cut continued north into G 96-99 and also to the west at E-G 94. In the eastern portion the soil was still densely packed and full of small pieces of tile (2 cassette) but little pottery. Plaster was slightly less frequent than this morning. In the western portion of the cut (slightly higher than the east), there is a thinner topsoil layer which lies immediately above a reddish layer full of larger pieces of plaster and tile. (This level is well above that of the 1987 tile fall, however.) This western portion yielded 1 1/2 cassette tile and 1/2 box pottery.
The balk cleaning continued to the west of the stump found in H 90-91, after excavation between it and the 1987 balk revealed that no plastic had been laid down at the end of the 1987 season. The balk area and fill area involved will be cleaned and cleared at a later date.
