Morning

Work began by completing the red layer cut in ABC/8.  The large quantity of ivory excavated in

ABC/8 yesterday necessitated the use of A again today. More ivory was found immediately.  The numerous fragments are similar to those found yesterday: small, worked, often burned and often incised rectangular and triangular fragments.  Notable are meander and zig-zag patterns incised  on a few of the fragments.  ABC/8 also produced a large quantity of bronze again today.

Next, the Red layer cut was continued into ABC/9.  Here the soil continues to be red and continues to produce large quantities of ivory and bronze.  Although bronze sheet and slag, as well as  numerous tacks and nails, are the common bronzes found in this area, today's excavation produced one extremely noteworthy find- a broze lion's (possibly panther's) head was found in B-9.

Tile continues to be frequent, white pottery continues to be infrequent.

In N/8-9, just at the floor level, a piece of burned wood was exposed.  Its surface was consolidated today.

Afternoon

Work began by continuing the red layer cut into ABC/9.  There is still a great deal of pottery and tile; notable is a concentration of tile in a pile in C-9.  Among the pottery there is some bucchero and one incised orange ware bowl.

The area excavated this afternoon produced little bronze. Only five fragments of bronze sheet were found.

The area excavated this afternoon also produced little ivory.  A few very small fragements were found.  The only notable fragment is one with five worked sides-one of them with a worked cut in it.

The burned wood was consolidated and left in the ground.
