Tuesday, July 4 1967

Work continued in trench 2C. In the southern end of the trench excavation was done with trowels. Scattered larger stones appeared in the south end, above the stratum at "galestra," up to 1.50m from the south wall of the trench.

A fragment of horserace, fairly large, (left side - cavetto molding, studs, trophy, head of third jockey) was found at the east side of the trench, about 3.0m from the south end (no find number).

A cat head plaque (terracotta) was found at a depth of 1.12m, 0.96m from the west side, and 3.20m from the south end (Find # 4).

A small fragment of gorgon antefix (nose and part of eye ridge) was found at a depth of 0.80m, 1.20m from the west side, and 2.20m from the south end (Find # 5).

A terracotta human head was found at a depth of 0.94m, 0.32m from the west side, and 2.46m from the south end (Find #6).

A number of fairly well preserved architectural fragments, mostly frieze, were also found in the same general area as the numbered finds. About five fruit boxes of roof tile were taken out.

In the northern end of the trench, larger stones appeared, rather concentrated in an area extending

roughly from 1.0m from the north end to the north side of trench 2B (see plan, p. 33). These stones were left in situ and cleaned. Their depth, between 0.5m and 0.7m, corresponds to the depth and level of the stone in trench 2A - west (see p.5, and trench plan), but they follow a line running diagonally from northeast to southwest, on an angle of about 110 degrees from the north side of the stone in trench 2A - west.

The overall arrangement of stone in the whole complex at this point suggests a round building, with the crossing of the "T" of last year's excavation in the center.
