Opening Elevations Locus 4:

NW: 25.07 m AE

NE: 25.10 m AE

SW: 23.89 m AE

SE: 24.52 m AE

The morning began with a pick through the eastern 3.5m x 2m extent of Locus 4 that is at a slightly higher elevation than the 4m x 4m southern extent of the locus. While the pick was taking place in the east, defining of the rocks in the western extent was done in an effort to determine if they are a feature or not. Because we are in a contextually secure level, excavation methodology will change and hand sorting versus shoveling will take place. While defining the rocks, a potential piece of bronze was found and will be sent down for further analysis.

After all the loose dirt was cleared from the pick, another was done through the same 3.5m x 2m strip of Locus 4. While sorting the dirt from this pick, a large piece of slag was found along with a rocchetto fragment.

Post-lunch a pick was done through the entire area of the previous pick. Once sorting is being done in the east, defining of the rocks will be done at the same time in the west. There is significantly more material present in this locus including architectural terracotta, pottery, and bone, which was absent while excavating Locus 3. While cleaning up the loose dirt, a rocchetto fragment was found.

Special Find #51: Rocchetto
