STRATEGY: 1. Complete excavation of 1509 (explore stones on southern section). 2. Excavate 1512. Define possible stone structures on south and north section (plan north circle of stones first). 3. Define pit f602 in 1510 (outside pit to become 1512 eventually?).
SUMMARY: 1. 1504: completed excavation. The stones on the south section are not convincing as a wall, altough there seemed to be a compact pise superstructure above them. There was also an ashy patch within them. They are to be planned and given a feature number (f601) and removed tomorrow incase they turn out to be something. The ash could be an animal burrow. The large stones beneath the door jamb stone may also have been connected, although this may not be true as they are seperated by a red, calcite flecked soil. A roof tile was also associated with the stones. 2. 1512: began excavation of 10cm spit across trench. The stones by the north section did not continue down. They are to be given feature number 600 and removed (they were planned this morning). Pise/burnt clay lumps, pot, bone and flint were found in 1512. A second arbitrary spit will be taken off tomorrow with big picks (1513), as this appears to be fully developed soil without architecture. 3. 1510: took off another 5cm spit (excavated pit in negative and then positive today). Could not trace pit edges, although the pit appears to be defined in the western section. Finds included animal bones, human bones, pot and flint. The scatter of finds is concentrated and this could also define the pit (recorded in yesterday's sketch). There are some large stones in the lot, they could be connected to those in the southern section described in 1509 above. Planning must also be done.
