A.M.

Began a 10 cm cut in Y-Z/16-18 moving west. The soil in Y-Z/16 was medium brown with some plaster and carbon.  In the southern portion of Z/16, the soil was more yellowish as was the soil in the western portion of Y-Z/17.  The remainder of the cut in meters 17 and 18 (not all of which was finished) was more yellow with a sandy texture.  The majority of the material came off of the medium brown soil, including a fragment of a painted base (#1), a bone with a cut mark (#2), and a carbonized wooden base (#3).  2 1/2 latte boxes of pottery and bone fragments were recovered, as well as 1/2 of a cassetta of tile and plaster fragments.  Two large plaster fragments (20 x 10 cm approximately) were included in this.

Began to remove a small area of rocks against the west baulk of Z/13.  These stones were much smaller than the large stones in the concentration extending from the south baulk in this area.  This work clarified the drop in stratigraphy in this area, and we may possible be coming down on bedrock in this area.  This work produced 1 latte box of pottery and bone and 12-15 fragments of tile and plaster.  A fragment of painted pottery (#4) was also found in this area.

Continued defining the area in Z/13 and into Z/14.  This work produced 1/2 of a latte box of pottery and bone, 10-15 fragments of plaster and tile and a small fragment of stamped buccharo (#8).

Completed this morning's cut in Y-Z/17-18 and began a second cut in Y-Z/18, lowering the trench floor to approximately 235 cm.  The soil was yellowish and sandy with occasional pieces of carbon.  In the southeast corner of Z/18, a larger fragment of pan tile was found and left in sito.  The soil in this area was darker and seems more similar to the destruction layer that has been found elsewhere in the trench.  This work produced 1 1/4 latte boxes of pottery and bone, a small bit of bronze, and 1/2 cassetta of tile and plaster fragments.  All other finds came from this area.
