AM

Work began in locus 5 bringing down the clay patches another 5 cm. A few fragments of eroded tile were found. A pick pass was done in locus 4 , some pottery and tile continues to be found in brownish yellow clay-like soil. Soil was sorted by hand and the locus was flattened. The linear rock packing in locus 5 , while becoming clearer has only a meter exposed therefore we will extend the trench towards the east to try and better understand the packing. Using triangulation off the east baulk wall points, the extension baulk wall points were placed. The extension is a 2x4 meter area along the eastern baulk, the top soil here will be declared locus 6 , it is across the entire extension and slops from north to south. Opening elevations and photos were taken.

Opening Elevations: Locus 6

SE- 79E, 42S- 26.53 mAE

SW- 77E, 42S- 26.335 mAE

2 pick passes were done in the extension. The soil is heavily included with roots and stones. 3 stumps are present in the middle of the locus. The soil is a dark brown and very dry and crumbly. Some eroded and pitted pieces of tile were found. Roots were cut and soil was sorted by hand. Locus 5 was scraped and then brushed. The southern baulk wall was trimmed

The floor of locus 4 was leveled. Some pottery and a piece of bucchero was recovered.

PM

A pick pass was done in the southern half of the extension, soil was sorted by hand and dumped. The northern half was picked and soil continues to be gray and clay-like, most of the leaf litter is gone but roots are still very prevalent. Almost no material is being recovered, if there is terracotta it is very eroded. A piece of modern brick was found. Roots were cut. The southern half was picked again. 2 more pick passes were completed. The soil is becoming more clay-like and full of less roots.
