Resumed work at 10:00 AM
tile - 2/5 cassetta
pottery - 1/3 latte
1. Resumed cut in N/67 to c. 95 cm. Cut also extended to M/67 and taken west to about 15 cm off line of tile. The soil as excavated was a fairly consistent quality being a medium-light to medium-dark soil mixed with medium frequency of small chunks of plaster. Also occassional small chunks of charcoal (rare). Pottery was mixed and infrequent. Tile and plaster were small and worn. A small set of rocks abutt the N. baulk at line dividing 69-68/M.
This cut was taken up only near tile line (which is 85 cm) so as to mesti this area.
tile - 1 dz small pieces
pottery - 45 latte
2. Area noted NM II, p. 183 in M/66 mestied. Soil is definately a redder brown in area (not yet defined at limits): to the east this soil does not extend to line of tile but fades to a darker brown then to light brown at tile line. Pottery is fine orange ware and bucchero. A few flecks of bronze.
3. Cut to c. 80 cm made in N-O/64-65. Soil in this is even across cut, making transition cut of light olive-brown to our typical mixed soil. In this instance, at this level the inclusions are minimal, the soil light to medium brown. We are leaving stones and larger tile in situ in hopes of isolating a line of rock/tile similar to that in M-O/67-66. Several chunks of metal slag where recovered.
tile - 1 3/4 small, worn
pottery - 3 latte
