Rectangle 8 and Rectangle 7 extension

Photographs taken.

The southern crosswall in Rectangle 8 was cleaned. ( See p. 233) Its outline is not yet clear and further clearing is required.  Concerning its relation to Rectangle 8 we can say that it (and the surrounding soil) has cut into part of the Rectangle.  The soil around the stones of the wall is greyish and extend into part of grid E 1-4, that is, the grid that borders onto the wall.  Two boxes of tiles were gathered from this area, and two strawberry cartons with sherds.

Work was begun in the doorway which forms part of the eastern side of Rectangle 7.  Its position can be seen on the photographs and the drawing on p. 202. The doorway is set up as a trench measuring 2.0 m. N-S and 1.60 m. E-W.  The purpose is to see if the finds from Rectangle 7 continue through this doorway into the courtyard of the upper building.  It should be noted that much good pottery (bucchero) and ivories were found in R7 grid C1, which is directly at the doorway.
