AM
Work in the morning began by picking with a big pick along the eastern half of the trench and moving north to south. The soil remains a dark brown topsoil filled with organic material. There continues to be several pieces of tile and a few pieces of pottery recovered. Work was focused on leveling out the eastern half of the trench and getting that half down to the level of T 78 and 77 . Once the eastern half of the trench was leveled, the rest of the trench was picked and the dirt under the stump in the southwest corner was excavated. A small fragment of charcoal was recovered in the southwestern corner of the trench. Now that the trench is mostly level, pick passes began again along the eastern half of the trench moving north to south in meter swaths across the entire trench. A frieze plaque fragment was found in the southeast corner of the trench.
Special Find #1
Frieze Plaque Fragment
~38.74 S, 105.31 E
~150.5 cm BD / 27.415 m AE
A rochetto fragment was also recovered around the center of the trench. Tile and pottery, while still being recovered in decent amounts, is becoming less worn and finer in appearance.
Special Find #2
Rochetto Fragment
~39.3 S, 104.28 E
~163 cm BD / 27.29 m AE
Both special finds were recovered from the wheelbarrow, so all points are approximated. After points were taken, work was focused on straightening the baulk walls and clipping roots.
PM
Work in the afternoon began with a pick pass in the western half of the trench moving north to south in a meter area. Once this pass was completed, the rest of the trench was picked in the same way. Now that the trench seems to be nearing the original ground level, once the trench has been picked, work was refocused on trimming the baulk walls. Once the baulk walls were trimmed, the stump in the southwest corner was picked and axed for removal. At the end of the day, elevations were taken.
End of Day Elevations:
NW: 7.25 cm BD / 26.765 m AE
NE: 149 cm BD / 27.43 m AE
SE: 158 cm BD / 27.34 m AE
SW: 40 cm BD / 27.09 m AE
